Episode Topics: Labor stories, postpartum survival tips, raising kids close in age, mental preparation for childbirth, navigating early parenthood challenges, finding joy in everyday parenting moments

Things we learned during this episode:

There are 3 stages of labor 🤯

Latent phase of the first stage of labor: The latent phase begins when there are cervical dilation and contractions, and it ends when the active phase begins.

Active phase of the first stage of labor: The active phase begins when the cervix starts to dilate quicker, usually after 3-4 cm dilatation. Here, you should advocate for yourself: you need to be moved throughout every 30 minutes to an hour. You can also sleep with a peanut ball, you can use a yoga ball

Transition or deceleration phase of the first stage of labor: The transition phase of labor usually begins at a cervical dilation of about 8 cm, and it ends at cervical dilatation of 10 cm when the cervix is fully dilated. This final stage only lasts 30 minutes or so!

Episode 14

Kara is a married mom of three living in Tennessee. You may recognize her from her content on social media @karathebabynurse, where she offers tips, tricks and really important advice on preparing for birth and the postpartum journey.

She began having kids when she was young, getting pregnant on her nursing graduation night, and has spent her career helping other women be more prepared than she was.

In our conversation with her, we talk about her birth experiences, what every family should prepare before birth to make the transition easier and birth stages.

The most impactful part of her journey:

Postpartum was the phase that rocked my world the most because I was not prepared whatsoever. Now that I’m a postpartum nurse and content creator, my goal is to help prepare people and bridge the gap in knowledge about that phase.

Fun Fact:

I am a super big fantasy reader, love true crime, gym go-er, and love thrift and antique shopping!

What do you tell your patients? The first two weeks are usually the hardest. it takes your blood levels and hormones four months to rebalance. give yourself time and grace

4 months is when you'll get back to normal a bit, and that's when you'll feel a little better. to feel like yourself completely, it'll take 2 years

What brought you expected joy in becoming a parent? Being able to go do fun things with kids. They're 100,000 times more fun with kids. It's so fun to experience the firsts and have them have fun.
